Iraqi banking sanctions affect Hezbollah... and Franjieh is on the list
Fady Mahouly
The Iraqi authorities included the Lebanese “Hezbollah” on the list of banking sanctions in Iraq, based on the amended US Executive Order No. 13224 regarding combating terrorism, against the backdrop of what they described as the continued financing and logistical support networks linked to the party.
The decision includes imposing restrictions on banking and financial transactions related to the names and entities listed within the sanctions framework.
The sanctions also targeted Hezbollah leader Mahmoud Qamati, along with the head of the Marada Movement, Suleiman Franjieh, who was included on the list because of his association with Hezbollah.
Under this decision, banks and financial institutions operating in Iraq are prohibited from conducting any commercial or banking transactions with the listed names, and the restrictions also impose a freeze on any assets or financial flows that pass through official Iraqi channels to the targeted parties.
